Impacts of Farm Policy Alternatives on Two Representative Tennessee Cotton Farms

Northwest Tennessee Large Grain Farm

  • This research estimates the farm-level impacts of alternative farm bill provisions (H.R. 2646 and S. 1731) on the financial performance and strength of two representative Tennessee cotton farms: 1900 acre and 4.050 acre cotton farms in Southwest Tennessee. Both farm improve their cash position and reduce their risk considerably under both proposals.

Northwest Tennessee Large Grain Farm

  • A 2,480-acre representative grain farm in Weakley and Henry counties that produces corn (1,200 acres), soybeans (1,200 acres) and double-cropped wheat (600 acres)

Northwest Tennessee Moderate-Size Grain Farm

  • A 1,182-acre representative grain & livestock farm in Weakley and Henry counties that produces corn (400 acres), soybeans (500 acres), double-cropped wheat (200 acres), and hay and pasture to support a 50-head cow/calf operation

Southwest Tennessee Large Cotton Farm

  • A 4,000-acre representative cotton farm in Haywood county that produces cotton (2,580 acres), corn (1,200 acres), soybeans (1,200 acres) and double-cropped wheat (600 acres)

Southwest Tennessee Moderate-Size Cotton Farm

  • A 1,735-acre representative cotton farm in Fayette county that produces cotton (837 acres), corn (168 acres) and soybeans (670 acres)
